The Fed may have a hard time overlooking the economy’s recent flop

http://ift.tt/1sJE12M

janet yellenThe Federal Reserve will release a statement on its latest policy decision and opinions on the economy on Wednesday.

In company with leaving its benchmark interest rate unchanged, economists don’t expect the Fed to make other major changes.

But the way it appraises the economy could present a challenge: acknowledging temporary drags in the first quarter without suggesting that it plans to raise rates faster than expected.

“Given the data-dependency of monetary policy, it is important for the FOMC to describe the economic status in a way that it can manage market expectations,” said Lewis Alexander, Nomura’s chief economist, in a note.

“The weaker-than-expected March employment report and core CPI might demand further elaboration regarding the committee’s intentions to overlook weak Q1 data,” he added.

Depending on who’s interpreting the economic data, the Fed has compelling reasons to either wait or proceed with tightening monetary policy.

Those citing reasons to wait can point to last week Friday, when the Bureau of Economic Analysis said first-quarter gross domestic product rose by 0.7%, the slowest pace since the first quarter of 2014 when the economy shrank.

Because of seasonal-adjustment glitches at the BEA, first-quarter growth typically undershoots the growth trend seen in other quarters. However, weak consumer spending and the uncommon 449% year-on-year spike in mining investment has economists like David Rosenberg wondering whether the economy has entered a soft patch, adjustment issues aside.

It’s “hardly likely” that the Q1 real GDP slowdown was a one-off, the Gluskin Sheff chief economist wrote in a client note. The Fed may cite seasonality again as a reason why growth slowed, just like minutes of its March meeting did.

During its two-day meeting this week, the Fed would also have noted that inflation slipped in March one month after rising to its 2% target for the first time in five years. Personal consumption expenditures rose 1.8%, BEA data showed on Monday.

The June 13-14 meeting is when many in markets anticipate the Fed will raise borrowing costs again; Bloomberg’s World Interest Rate Probability on Tuesday reflected a 70.4% chance of a rate hike next month. The Fed can look to the labor market’s relative strength, even after a weaker-than-expected jobs report in March, as evidence that it can continue to hike.

“The risk, albeit a small one, is that they will come closer to moving in a tightening direction than currently expected,” said Peter Hooper, Deutsche Bank’s chief economist, in a preview of Wednesday’s statement.

The Fed is also unlikely to provide any major updates on how it plans to stop expanding or shrink its nearly $5 trillion balance sheet as soon as this year, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch. “Clearly the Fed does not want to surprise the market, preferring to dribble out details, thereby allowing the Fed to test the market reaction,” US Economist Michelle Meyer said in a note.

Oil tumbles after failing to hold a key level

http://ift.tt/2qpIt9D

West Texas Intermediate crude oil is under pressure, down 1.9%, or $0.91, at $47.83 per barrel after failing to hold its 200-day moving avearage. The energy component climbed as high as $49.28 early Tuesday, but surrendered those gains and slipped back below key support provided by the 200-day moving average near $49.00.

Heavy selling took hold on Tuesday afternoon, pushing oil down to its lowest level since March 27. Traders are watching the $47.34 mark closely, as a close below there would be the lowest since the end of November.

On Wednesday, data released by the Energy Information Administration is expected to show US oil inventories fell by 3.5 million barrels, according to a Bloomberg survey. Gasoline stockpiles are expected to have increased by 1 million barrels.

WTI has been under pressure for the last several weeks. The energy component struggled near $54, and started to move lower after data released on April 20 showed a smaller than expected drawdown in oil inventories and the first jump in gasoline supplies in several months. Its price remained under pressure last week despite inventories posting their biggest drop of the year.

WTI has fallen about 11% so far this year as talk of OPEC extending its production cut through the end of the year has failed to provide support.

Meanwhile, Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, is down 2.2% at $50.34 per barrel on Tuesday, and has lost 10.9% this year.

FreedomWorks: Obama Spending Process, Levels, and Priorities

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Ahead of the vote on the omnibus spending bill, FreedomWorks President Adam Brandon released the following statement about the organization’s key vote against the Consolidated Appropriations Act, H.R. 244:

“Enough has been enough for years under a Republican House of Representatives. Speaker Paul Ryan came into his new position emphasizing getting back to regular order, that we would see the end of 1,700-page omnibus spending bills written in a week behind closed doors, jamming up even the conservatives who oppose this sort of brinksmanship. Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi couldn’t be happier. This bill represents Obama spending process, levels, and priorities.

“If I didn’t know that this was a Republican bill, I might have assumed that Democrats had the White House and the majorities in the House and Senate and that somehow Republicans got a few tiny concessions. But it’s actually a GOP bill.”

Today, FreedomWorks’ director of public policy and legislative affairs, Jason Pye, sent a letter to House and Senate offices stating that FreedomWorks will key vote against the Consolidated Appropriations Act. The letter also included the rationale behind the decision.

May 2, 2017

Key Vote NO on the Consolidated Appropriations Act, H.R. 244

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to vote NO on the Consolidated Appropriations Act, H.R. 244. The bill would fund the federal government for the remainder of FY 2017, which ends on September 30.

The process for this omnibus could not have been worse. This massive, nearly 1,700-page spending measure was negotiated behind closed doors between congressional leadership from both chambers and appropriators.

With a Republican-controlled Congress and a Republican president, this spending bill reflects Obama-era spending levels. The bill annualizes base discretionary spending for FY 2017 at $1.07 trillion. This spending level blows through the spending caps established by the Budget Control Act of 2011 by $30 billion. The bill spends an additional $106 billion for overseas contingency operations, disaster relief, and other spending, which isn’t counted toward the spending caps.

In total, the bill authorizes more than $1.175 trillion in annualized discretionary spending for FY 2017.

The bill also falls short of promoting conservative priorities. While the bill does renew the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program and does not include funding for ObamaCare’s cost-sharing subsidies, it allocates nearly $296 million to bail out Puerto Rico’s Medicaid program, preserves current spending levels for the Environmental Protection Agency, increases spending for the National Institutes of Health and the National Endowment for the Arts, and provides a bailout for a private sector labor union.

It’s telling when the Democratic leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), bragged, “Early on in this debate, Democrats clearly laid out our principles. At the end of the day, this is an agreement that reflects those principles.”

At some point, Republicans in Congress must look in the mirror and ask themselves, “What are we doing here?” Every election cycle Republicans run on a limited government platform and claim they’re going to cut spending. In Washington, D.C., however, they negotiate with themselves and sell the farm to Democrats for little in return, and conservative priorities get tossed aside. This has to end.

FreedomWorks will count the votes for the Consolidated Appropriations Act, H.R. 244, when calculating our Scorecard for 2017 and reserves the right to score any related votes. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of the House and Senate who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.

Sincerely,

Adam Brandon

President, FreedomWorks

This Hair Ad Reveals A Critical Truth About Domestic Violence

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

An ad campaign from Bangladesh is highlighting the heartbreaking consequences of domestic violence.

The ad was produced by the Dhaka-based advertising agency Sun Communications for Jui, a hair oil company. In it, a young woman is at a busy salon for a hair cut. Luxurious long hair is a source of pride for many South Asians, so the salon employee is surprised when the woman tells her to “cut it short.”

The hair stylist tries a few different lengths, cutting the woman’s hair shorter every time, but the client isn’t satisfied with the results. In a surprise twist, the client subtly reveals the real reason why she wants her hair cut ― because it’s been used by an abuser to hurt her.

“Make it even shorter,” the woman said in the video, gripping her hair tightly next to her scalp. “So that no one can hold it like this again.”

The ad then shares a sobering fact about domestic violence in Bangladesh ― that every 80 of 100 women in Bangladesh face violence in some form or another in their lives.

“Hair, the pride of a woman. Let it never be the reason for her weakness,” a title text from the ad reads, before displaying a domestic violence hotline phone number.

Qazi Tushar, an account executive at Sun Communications Limited, told HuffPost that the ad was created for Jui for International Women’s Day. The ad has received more than 100 million views from around the world.

Tushar said that Jui set up a domestic violence hotline with the help of counseling psychology experts at the University of Dhaka. The hotline had existed before the advertisement aired, but calls reportedly starting picking up right after the ad was placed online.

“Our established toll free help line is taking in a good number of calls, every day, coming from different parts of the country,” Tushar said in a Facebook message.

A survey by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics in 2011 suggests that as many as 87 percent of currently married women have experience violence of some form from their current husbands.

The Sun Communications team hopes that the ad will encourage women who are facing some form of abuse to speak up and get help.

Hundreds Of Brides In India Receive Wooden Bats To Fend Off Drunken Husbands

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

An unusual wedding gift distributed to hundreds of brides at a recent mass marriage ceremony in central India is shining a poignant light on the country’s long-standing issue of domestic violence.

Social Justice Minister Gopal Bhargava gave wooden paddles to nearly 700 newly married women at a government-organized event in the state of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, as tools for the women to fend off their husbands with, should they become drunk or physically abusive.

#WATCH MP minister Gopal Bhargava gifted ‘Mogri’, wooden bats used to wash clothes, to 700 brides, to use on husbands if they turn alcoholic http://pic.twitter.com/dzEuFdUSoN

— ANI (@ANI_news) April 30, 2017

The paddles, normally used to beat dirty laundry, bear the text “For beating drunkards” and “Police won’t intervene,” according to translations by Agence France-Presse, which first reported the story.

Bhargava did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

“Women say whenever their husbands get drunk, they become violent. Their savings are taken away and splurged on liquor,” he told AFP, explaining that the paddles should be used as a means to stave off abuse.

“There is no intent to provoke women or instigate them to violence,” he said. “The bat is to prevent violence.”

The politician posted a photo to his Facebook account on Sunday that appears to show a bride holding a paddle, locally known as a “mogri.” The text on the paddle says “Gift meant to beat up alcoholics,” according to a HuffPost translation.

“Let the wooden paddles do the talking” if your husbands refuse to listen, Bhargava reportedly urged the new brides at the wedding ceremony. He has ordered 10,000 paddles to be handed out for such purposes, according to several news reports.

The issue of violence against women in India drew international attention and outcry following the widely publicized fatal gang rape of a female New Delhi student in late 2012, and the court-ordered punitive gang rape of a young woman in West Bengal in 2014.

Gender-based violence crimes in India have continued to rise despite the government’s promise of a “policy of zero tolerance” in 2014. Some 27.5 million women are estimated to be affected, according to The Lancet, but fewer than 1 percent of survivors report their assaults to the police.

Marital rape is legal in India, making it more difficult for women to report cases of spousal abuse. Women in marginalized Indian communities also face systemic discrimination, which can further hinder them from reporting abuse, as Amnesty International notes.

India’s Parliament enacted the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act in 2005 to address the issue, but pundits have attributed its apparent failure to a lack of enforcement and strategy surrounding cultural stigma. According to a World Values Survey based on data gathered between 2010 and 2014, around two-thirds of women in India believe spousal abuse can be justified.

India also passed the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act in 2012, an unprecedented law in the country that outlines specific punishments for different types of sexual abuse against minors. But humanitarian activists say crimes like the 2014 rape of a 6-year-old girl in Bangalore highlight the need for stricter implementation.
