A great corporate culture isn’t something you can buy. It’s organic; it has to be cultivated. Inc.‘s Best Workplaces celebrates companies that actively strive to build vibrant and engaging cultures. More than 1,600 companies applied this year–three times as many as last year. Together with my company, Quantum Workplace, a leader in employee-feedback software, Inc. assessed these companies according to their employee-engagement and people practices.
Employee engagement is a measure of the behavioral and emotional connections workers have with their companies. Each participating company administered an employee survey on issues like career development, communication, trust in leadership, team dynamics, and individual needs. Employees answered 30 questions using a six-point scale ranging from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree. To have its results qualify, each company had to achieve a statistically significant response rate based on employee count. Survey scores account for employer size to level the playing field between small and large businesses.

My family and I recently celebrated the life of my grandmother. While reminiscing, I ran across a yearbook from her senior year of high school. Next to everyone’s picture was a section where they could indicate future ambitions upon graduation. Next to hers was something that I would have never guessed, “Go to business school.”
Unfortunately, she never had the opportunity to pursue this goal. We didn’t talk about it but I assume, as in most cases, life happened. Regardless, she played an important role in my life and taught me many critical lessons. This was one more to add to the list.
After reading her remarks, I came to a sudden realization that was better put to words by Les Brown, motivational speaker and thought leader.

On this episode, Entrepreneur Network partner Brian Tracy breaks down the top three mistakes leaders make on a daily basis. The first mistake, Tracy says, is to criticize others — not to overly criticize them, but to criticize them at all. Instead, he urges leaders to focus on a solution, not on who caused the problem or who is to blame. That way, you can fix the problem while maintaining your employees’ self-image and confidence so they can perform at their very best.

“Both parties don’t like to admit it, but there has to be what the GOP used to derisively call “death panels.” The only question is how to do it, because there’s no way we’re going to pay for everyone to get the most expensive treatment. Every other country has figured this out, we can too.”
