From 2D to 3D, a New Reality Emerges

Organizations interested in exploring mixed reality can start by considering real-world applications and enterprise implications of this emerging technology.

Who could have imagined that the two-dimensional computer or smartphone screen might one day feel rather constricting?

“As technology has advanced, we’ve almost seen ourselves limited by the ability to interact through two-dimensional spaces and screens,” says Nelson Kunkel, a managing director at Deloitte Consulting LLP. “Breaking down those barriers opens up new possibilities for collaboration, workflows, and business processes.”

Mixed reality, which blends virtual reality, augmented reality, and internet of things (IoT) data, brings digital and virtual objects into the real world by imbuing them with physical characteristics. “As opposed to just seeing them, we’re able to interact with them naturally—walking around them, grasping them, even throwing them,” Kunkel says.

In the age of mixed reality, enterprises are rethinking their brands, content, and interfaces, as well as how the organization operates. “CIOs have the chance to create new opportunities, business models, and organizational structures,” Kunkel says. For example, in manufacturing environments, the time and cost of advancing a product from idea to market is decreasing thanks to mixed reality. Using the technology, global teams can collaborate on a single object, examining it from different angles, intents, and areas of expertise, and then share their findings in real time.

“Our ability to understand and work with each other, whether in the same space or on opposite sides of the world, is exponentially more efficient, effective, and interesting,” Kunkel says. “Mixed reality is reshaping how work is done and how we can reimagine experiences and engagement across the enterprise.”

In this Tech Trends 2017 video, Kunkel discusses the far-reaching potential of mixed reality.
