The last decade has witnessed the emergence of a paradox perspective on corporate sustainability. By explicitly acknowledging tensions between different desirable, yet interdependent and conflicting sustainability objectives, a paradox perspective enables decision makers to achieve competing sustainability objectives simultaneously and creates leeway for superior business contributions to sustainable development. In stark contrast to the business case logic, a paradox perspective does not establish emphasize business considerations over concerns for environmental protection and social well-being at the societal level. In order to contribute to the consolidation of this emergent field of research, we offer a definition of the paradox perspective on corporate sustainability and a framework to delineate its descriptive, instrumental, and normative aspects. This framework clarifies the paradox perspective’s contents and its implications for research and practice. We use the framework to map the contributions to this thematic symposium on paradoxes in sustainability and to propose questions for future research.

Talk about bad timing: Kim Kardashian says she realized her marriage to Kris Humphries would end in divorce on their honeymoon.
The 36-year-old reality star told “Watch What Happens Live” host Andy Cohen that she felt pressured to marry the NBA star because she was getting older.
“I just thought, ‘Holy s―, I’m 30 years old, I better get this together. I better get married,” she said. “I think a lot of girls do go through that where they freak out thinking they’re getting old and have to figure it out, all their friends are having kids. It was more of that situation.”
The former couple married in an over-the-top August 2012 ceremony that aired as a two-day, four-hour special on E!. The marriage lasted just 72 days before the reality star filed for divorce in October 2011.
In her interview with Cohen, the “Kimoji” creator said she knew “it wasn’t going to work out” on their honeymoon.
Their heavily publicized divorce was finalized in April 2013 and Kardashian went on to marry Kanye West in May 2014. The power couple have two kids: Daughter North and son Saint.
The secret to staying happily married to West, according to the reality star?
“I feel as though we’ll always be in the honeymoon period,” Kardashian told MailOnline a few months after tying the knot. “I try to treat him like it’s his birthday every single day. I think we’ll always be like that.”

“Wonder Woman” hits theaters nationwide on Friday, which means the name “Gal Gadot” is presently everywhere as Warner Bros. ramps up promotional efforts for what will likely be a blockbuster hit.
The actress, who plays the titular superhero, hails from Israel. As you discuss her fabulous performance, you may be tempted to imbue her surname with a French inflection, dropping the “t” as in the word for that scary dish involving mollusks.
Beware this temptation.
Gal Gadot pronounces her name with a hard “T,” as BrowBeat recently pointed out, unearthing a year-old interview the actress gave on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Just after arriving on stage, but before bluntly asking host Jimmy Kimmel’s opinion of her breasts, Gadot gave a lesson: Gal, said more like “Gaul,” and Gadot, said “gah-DOHT.”

GadoT explained that the names mean “wave” and “riverbank,” respectively. (Although the family name used to be Greenstein.)
Speaking to Kimmel just before “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” hit theaters, the actress went on to describe how she’d been plagued by fanboys’ comments about her body since taking on the role of Wonder Woman. But if early reviews of her character’s breakout film are any indication, the prevailing conversation will be much more substantial. Ready your alveolars.

“The last time we talked, we discussed that this is the best time for you to get pregnant,” she continued. “So what’s going on?”
It took me a moment to process the gravity of what my doctor was saying. I felt my stomach drop and tears begin to form as I thought about how my greatest dream was slipping away. I’ve always wanted kids. In fact, I can’t imagine my life without any. Yet, time is passing by and I’m not closer to motherhood.
I cleared my head and responded, “I understand. At this point, I may have to proceed on my own.” “
Well, I hope that’s not the case. In the meantime, I think you need to talk to a high risk doctor about your autoimmune condition to see how it would affect you during a pregnancy. Right now, your blood work looks good, you’re at a great weight and your exam was perfect. However, I’ve never had a patient like you. Do you know of anyone else with IGG4-RD that’s had a baby?”
“No and neither has my rheumatologist. All I know is my body overreacts to any virus, incision or changes of any sort. It might not be kind to a fetus. Combined with my PCOS, bringing a child to term won’t be easy.”
“Ever consider a surrogate?”
I want to see and feel my child growing just like other women, I thought. But, I replied, “I don’t know that I could afford that.”
“A lot of people have success with crowdfunding. I think you have a unique story that would resonate.” “I’ll think about it,” I muttered. But, I thought, I don’t want to beg people to support me. No matter how large my medical bills have gotten over the years, I’ve always tried to pay them myself. I can’t expect strangers to care about my struggles.
I slowly got dressed and contemplated the reality that I may never have children of my own. I thought, I never imagined surviving all of my medical struggles to end up without a family; with no one to love or care for me as I age. I paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to survive surgeries, procedures or a lymphoma scare because I thought the best years of my life were yet to come. But, now I have to face the fact that with every passing day I get closer to having to face my greatest fear that I will be childless; that the future I envisioned will not come to fruition.
How am I going to face this? I wondered. I suppose like every other obstacle in my life: think, plan, pray and never give up.

Stocks started today’s session in the red, on downbeat earnings results from Macy’s (M) and Kohl’s (KSS) and a hotter than expected wholesale inflation reading that adds to the likelihood of a Fed rate move at the June FOMC meeting. Tomorrow’s CPI reading has assumed relatively more significance following this morning’s PPI report.
Macy’s and the broader department store space has been struggling for a while given their inability to adjust to the changing consumer spending landscape of growing online sales weighing on foot traffic in the brick-and-mortar facilities. Macy’s results were a bit more disappointing this morning as it not only came out with a bigger than expected decline in same-store sales but also missed consensus EPS and revenue estimates. Kohl’s did better with respect to EPS and revenue results, on the back of disciplined inventory management, but same-store sales missed the mark.
We provide the Q1 earnings season scorecard for the Retail sector below, but please note that this daily publication features the best research output of the Zacks analyst team. Retail Sector Scorecard (as of Thursday, May 11th)
Including this morning’s releases from Macy’s and Kohl’s, we now have Q1 results from 23 of the 42 retailers in the S&P 500 index (for the index as whole, we now have results from 452 members). Total earnings for these 23 retailers are up +1.9% from the same period last year on +4.7% higher revenues, with 56.5% beating EPS estimates and an equal proportion beating revenue estimates.
Please note that we have a stand-alone Retail sector, unlike the official Standard & Poor’s placement of this space in the Consumer Discretionary sector. The Zacks Retail sector includes, besides the traditional department stores and other brick-and-mortar retailers, the online vendors like Amazon and Priceline and restaurant operators. Most of the 23 Zacks Retail sector companies that have reported Q1 results already at this stage are online vendors and restaurant players, with the traditional retail operators starting the reporting process with this morning’s Macy’s disappointment.
The aggregate results from the 23 retailers that have reported Q1 results already are tracking below what we had seen from the same companies in other recent periods. This is despite the +41.1% growth in Amazon’s earnings on +22.6% higher revenues. On an ex-Amazon basis, the sector’s Q1 earnings growth would be modestly in the negative.

Today’s Featured Research Reports
NVIDIA shares have surged following the strong quarterly report on Tuesday that eased some of the earlier worries about the company’s exposure to a slowing gaming market. The stock was a standout performer last year, but was modestly in the red through the May 9th earnings release. But it is now up +18.3% since the start of the year following the market’s enthusiastic reception to its earnings report. The Zacks analyst likes NVIDIA’s innovative product pipeline and strength in gaming and high-end notebook GPUs. The stock has had impressive run over the past year and the market’s post-earnings response indicates that the momentum likely has staying power. Shares of Buy rated PNC Financial outperformed the Zacks Regional Banks industry over the last six months gaining +13.3% vs. +8.8%. The Zacks analyst likes the company’s efforts to generate positive operating leverage through its cost-saving initiatives. Also, management projects revenues to rise at a mid-single digit rate in 2017, aided by loan growth. Further, its deal to acquire the commercial and vendor finance business of ECN Capital is expected to be marginally accretive to earnings in 2017. On the flip side, the bank remains vulnerable to developments on the interest rate, which have stabilized lately, but still remain below the March level. Buy rated Anthem shares gained +25.3% year to date compared with the Zacks HMO industry’s increase of +12.9%. The company reported better-than-expected first quarter results with earnings surpassing expectations and increasing year over year. The Zacks analyst likes the company’s diverse product portfolio, divestitures, prudent capital management, modest cash position, strategic acquisitions and ACO arrangements. Although its proposed merger with Cigna has been blocked, this month the company made another move to salvage the deal. However, high debt levels and a weak public exchange business pose risks for Anthem’s future earnings. (You can read the full research report on Anthem here >>>)
