English football has increasingly become a billionaire’s playground.
But it’s not all elusive Russians occupying the upper echelons of the game at the so-called ‘big clubs’ like Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea.
No, there’s some surprising names at the top of the money table and not all of them have brought winning ways with their wealth.
Using the 2017 Sunday Times rich list, Forbes, BBC, Birmingham Mail, and talkSPORT, Business Insider has put together this list of the 15 billionaire football club owners in England.
Here they are in ascending order.
Enigmatic Bloom took control of Brighton & Hove Albion in 2009 and oversaw promotion into the Premier League in 2017.
A Business Insider feature on Bloom speculated that his net worth could exceed a billion. It is believed he has sunk over £200 million into Brighton, including a £93 million injection so the club could move into a state-of-the-art 30,000 capacity stadium in 2011.
Nicknamed The Lizard, Bloom is a poker legend and even set up the UK’s biggest gambling syndicate StarLizard in the early 2000s, a company believed to make £100 million a year.
Most expensive signing: Shane Duffy – £4.5 million (2016)

Stephen Lansdown is co-founder of FTSE 100 financial services firm Hargreaves Lansdown. More recently, he invested in sport as he is majority shareholder of Bristol Rugby (rugby union), Bristol Flyers (basketball), and Bristol City (football).
Lansdown started Hargreaves Lansdown from his bedroom in 1981. In April 2009 he sold a 4.7% stake in the company for £47.2 million to put toward the costs of redeveloping Bristol City’s stadium, Ashton Gate. The works completed in 2016.
The club currently competes in the Championship.
Most expensive signing: Johnathan Kodjia – £3.25 million (2015)

Like Stephen Lansdown, Shahid Khan is an all-round sports tycoon as he owns NFL side Jacksonville Jaguars and Championship club Fulham.
Once dubbed ‘the face of the American dream‘ by Forbes in 2012, Khan made his fortune in the automotive and hospitality industries.
Khan bought Fulham from previous owner Mohamed Al Fayed in 2013. It was denied promotion into the Premier League because of an unsuccessful play-off campaign, losing to Reading in a Championship semi-final in May, 2017.
Most expensive signing: Konstantinos Mitroglou – £12.4 million (2014)

Gloria Steinem on Tuesday cheered activism against President Donald Trump as “fan-fucking-tastic.”
While delivering the commencement address to graduating students of the School of the Visual Arts in New York, Steinem said that while the Trump era has brought “great danger,” it has also reignited the spirit of activism.
“Now is a time of division, when a government and a president defeated by the popular vote ― lost by 3 million votes, let’s remember,” she said, to resounding applause. “We are in a time of maximum change, on one hand great danger … and on another hand, we are woke. I have never in my life seen so much organic, sustained, enthusiastic, inventive, creative and fan-fucking-tastic activism as I do.”
Steinem gave as an example January’s historic Women’s March, at which she was a keystone speaker in Washington, D.C. The 83-year-old first became involved with political activism while championing civil rights and speaking out against the Vietnam War.
Steinem’s speech echoed remarks she made on Saturday, when she said that while Trump has ultimately been “a disaster and a danger,” he’s also been a “consciousness raiser.”
Addressing the budding artists on Tuesday, Steinem also underscored the role that creativity plays in activism today.
“It is a rebellion of the visual arts, the arts of the heart,” she said. “You are going to have the best of all revolutions.”

Here’s one way to use social media as a force for good.
Instagram launched a new campaign this week, called #HereForYou, as a way to increase the conversation around mental health as part of Mental Health Awareness Month. The hashtag asks people to share their own photos along with their experiences with conditions like anxiety or eating disorders.
The social media platform kicked off the initiative by telling the stories of three people living with mental health disorders, all of whom used Instagram as a way to cope with their own conditions.
A post shared by Alison Presley Campion (@apresley) on May 8, 2017 at 11:47am PDT
Elyse Fox, one of the advocates featured in the campaign’s video, said that she hopes the initiative sends the message to users that they don’t have to suffer in silence.
“This campaign can put you in touch with millions of people all over the world with the touch of a button,” Fox said. “You never know how your story can affect someone in a positive way or make them feel like they’re not alone.”
Fox, who created the Instagram account Sad Girls Club as a way to talk about her own mental health journey, first started experiencing depression when she was a child.
She felt as though she had to keep what she was going through quiet and didn’t seek help until she was in college. Her goal is to share her story through #HereForYou so others don’t wait so long to get support. She also wants the campaign to help erase the feelings of shame that often come with a mental health issues.
“You can definitely get a support system by being more open on social media,” she said. “It’s been nothing but a positive experience for me and I encourage others to do the same.”
“Pretty Little Liars” star Troian Bellisario also joined the charge by using the hashtag on her own account. She also praised the social media app for creating a space where people can talk about their mental health.
“No one should suffer in silence,” she wrote. “There is no shame in asking for help. Take this moment to let someone know we are #hereforyou.”
An estimated one in five American adults will experience a mental health issue in a given year. But even though mental illness is so common, there are still negative stereotypes attached to it which can cause feelings of shame.
Studies show this stigma often prevents people from seeking help and also makes those living with a condition feel like others aren’t caring or sympathetic toward their experience. That’s what makes movements like #HereForYou so vital. They convey that there are people out there who do understand.
Of course, social media platforms like Instagram aren’t perfect when it comes to managing mental health. In some cases, they may even exacerbate it: Research suggests that excessive social media use can lead to depressive symptoms and increased feelings of loneliness.
There’s also criticism that social media contributes to issues through users posting images that could be triggering or by acting as a vehicle for harassment. And while social media companies work to combat these missteps through awareness campaigns and features like disabling comments, there’s still a long way to go before social media is considered a fully positive corner of the internet.
But there’s something to be said for creating more public awareness in a space that reaches millions of people. But it’s not the medium in which people discuss mental health that’s the most important ― it’s the message itself. Getting people to talk ― no matter how ― is crucial.
“If you aren’t dealing with [a mental health issue] there’s a chance you know someone who is,” Fox said. “I just want everyone to be more open and accepting to other people’s feelings. This campaign is definitely a step in normalizing that conversation.”
We’ll certainly give a “heart” for that cause.

Congratulations are in order for Zooey Deschanel and her husband, Jacob Pechenik ― the couple welcomed their second baby!
A representative for Deschanel confirmed the news to People, telling the outlet, “Zooey, Jacob and their daughter Elsie are overjoyed to welcome the newest member of their family.”
The couple welcomed the baby boy, whose name is Charlie Wolf, in Los Angeles last week, according to another source who spoke to People. It was first announced that Deschanel was pregnant back in January.
Baby Charlie joins older sister Elsie Otter, who was born in July 2015 shortly after the couple wed in secret.

There aren’t a lot of women in power, especially in Washington, and especially not right now. So, when an intelligent, straightforward, strong woman is spotted out in the wild ― i.e., before a nearly all-male Senate subcommittee ― it’s a moment to behold.
On Monday, Sally Yates was that woman and it was her moment. The former acting attorney general was unflappable while speaking for more than three hours before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism about Russian interference in the election.
She spoke simply, without any of the ingratiating smiles or laughs that women sometimes put on when faced with that many hostile male faces.
Her testimony provided much-needed nourishment for those of us starved for the sight of powerful women on the public stage and thrilled to see one facing down the kind of arrogant mansplainers that are part of our everyday lives.
“Sally Yates handles condescending men so well you’d almost think she’d been doing it her whole life,” author Liane Maeby tweeted, echoing the feelings of a whole lot of women (and men) heartened to see a poised professional woman stand up to so many powerful men.

In Trump’s America, women are hungrier than ever for female role models beyond the polished perfection of entertainers like Beyonce or the corporate gloss of Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg.
There certainly aren’t any in the White House. There, the most visible female is Ivanka Trump, a “#womanwhoworks” who insists her father is a feminist ― despite the pileup of evidence to the contrary.
Kellyanne Conway, once one of the most recognizable faces of the administration, seems to have settled into a more diminished role, ceding projects to Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law.
So when a strong woman emerges from the other side, she goes viral. In February, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) “persisted.” The next month Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) pushed back against now-former Fox host Bill O’Reilly. “I’m a strong black woman and I cannot be intimidated,” she said.
Yates, however, is not a politician. She is a career prosecutor with a long resume of public service. In 2010, President Barack Obama appointed her to become the first female U.S. attorney in Atlanta.
She is the kind of professional woman many of us encounter every day, but so rarely see in public life. Fifty-percent of middle managers in the U.S. are female, and many of us have relationships with competent career women.
Yates isn’t out there pushing a book about female empowerment or telling her personal story or selling us her brand of feminism. She is just doing her job. We don’t get to see that enough.
“When women and minorities see themselves represented at the highest levels, it does not confirm for us that we are capable of producing that level of work. It confirms that the world is ready to acknowledge us for it.” Reena Esmail, an Indian-American composer, said in a swooning Facebook status Monday about Yates.
We spend a lot of time paying attention to high-profile women known for their acting chops, their musical talent or simply their beauty. Even Michelle Obama, a strong woman beloved by so many, is known because she’s someone’s wife.
Politics is still a largely male sphere. There are only 21 female senators, and just 19 percent of seats in the House of Representatives are held by women. There are 13 men currently writing a health care law that will apply to, of course, the nation’s women.
The White House numbers are worse ― no important Cabinet positions are held by women. Even the people that take meetings at the White House are mostly men.
While it’s not altogether remarkable to see a man show up in front of a Senate panel, seeing a woman is more of a singularity. So it’s no surprise Yates was everywhere on Monday.
Her testimony is worth watching.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) quoted a statute at her. Yates quoted the law back to him, patiently explaining why her reasoning trumped his.
I’m enjoying watching a poised, professional woman rhetorically eviscerate paltry attempts (by grumpy old men) to outsmart her. #SallyYates
— Chris Gazzara (@ChrisGazzara) May 8, 2017
Sen. John Cornyn accused Yates of choosing not to enforce Trump’s executive order banning Muslims and refugees from the country because she didn’t like the policy. “I just wanted to say that,” Cornyn said, just getting a dig in and clearly planning on moving on.
Yates didn’t let that go by.
“Let me make one thing clear: It was not purely as a policy matter,” she said cooly. Yates then turned Cornyn’s comment back on him. She recalled how during her confirmation hearing for deputy attorney general, Republican senators had asked her what she would do if the president asked her to do something unlawful or unconstitutional.
“I looked at [the ban], I made a determination that I believed that it was unlawful. And I also thought that it was inconsistent with the principles of the Department of Justice and I said no. And that’s what I promised you I would do, and that’s what I did,” Yates said, giving a firm shake of her head.
She recounted how she had approached White House Counsel Don McGahn to tell him National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was lying about his interactions with the Russian ambassador.
“We wanted to tell the White House as quickly as possible,” Yates said. “To state the obvious: You don’t want your national security adviser compromised with the Russians.”
Clear and simple.

Markets love this shit. Nothing gets the animal spirits going more than a massive tax cut, especially on capital gains.
Here are the highlights.
A zero percent rate for couple on their first $24k in income.
‘In essence, we are creating a zero tax rate,’ said Cohn.
Reducing 7 brackets to 3: 10%, 25% and 35%
Corporate tax rate: 15%
Elimination of the AMT
Elimination of the death tax
We’re digesting big gains, so don’t expect another +200 today. But, this is long term bullish for stock holders. The last time we had a tax cut like this was under the idiot Bush and that paved the way for extreme hedonism and the best market since 1999. Albeit, it also led to the housing bubble and subsequent crash. We’ll deal with that later on.
