S&P cuts Illinois’ debt rating and warns it’s at risk of entering a ‘negative credit spiral’
Credit rating agency Standard and Poors lowered its rating on various bonds issued by Illinois one notch.
S&P lowered the state’s general obligation bonds one notch from ‘BBB-‘ to ‘BB+’ while cutting state appropriation bonds from ‘BB’ to ‘BB-.’
“The rating actions largely reflect the severe deterioration of Illinois’ fiscal condition, a byproduct of its stalemated budget negotiations, now approaching the start of a third fiscal year,” S&P Global Ratings credit analyst Gabriel Petek said in the release.
Petek also put Illinois on “CreditWatch negative” and warned that the state is at risk of entering a “negative credit spiral, where downgraded credit ratings would trigger contingent demands on state liquidity, further exacerbating its fiscal distress.”
Illinois is on the verge of going a third straight year without a budget after lawmakers failed to pass one in the spring session, according to WGN. It has more than $14 billion in unpaid bills.
“If lawmakers fail to reach agreement on a budget with provisions designed to reduce the state’s structural deficit, it’s likely we will again lower the ratings,” Petek wrote.
Illinois isn’t alone in its struggle. Chicago has also had trouble managing its municipal debt, which is currently rated “junk” at Moody’s and one notch above junk at both Fitch and S&P.

Tim Cook, Silicon Valley CEOs urge Trump to stay in Paris climate agreement
Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly called the White House on Tuesday to try to urge President Donald Trump to stay in the Paris climate agreement, as other Silicon Valley CEOs took similar actions.
Trump tweeted that he will be making an announcement on the agreement signed by his predecessor Barack Obama in 2016, possibly hinting that he will pull the United States out of the international agreement to curb global warming by limiting greenhouse gas emissions.
Cook, a longtime and vocal believer in climate change, called the White House to urge the administration to support the agreement, according to Bloomberg.
Apple joined Facebook, Google, Microsoft and 21 other corporations in an open letter to Trump asking him to reconsider pulling out of the agreement. The letter appeared as full-page ads in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and New York Post over the past month.
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff tweeted the letter yesterday and it was retweeted over 4,000 times.
“As some of the largest companies based or operating in the United States, we strongly urge you to keep the United States in the Paris Agreement on climate change,” reads the letter. “Climate change presents both business risks and business opportunities. Continued U.S. participation in the agreement benefits U.S. businesses and the U.S. economy in many ways.”

Cook has been an ardent believer in man-made climate change and in making Apple one of the greenest companies in Silicon Valley. In 2014 at a shareholders’ meeting, Cook angrily asked any climate change-skeptic Apple shareholders to drop their shares if they were not content with Apple’s investments in renewable energy.
In 2016, Apple reported 96 percent of electricity used in its facilities worldwide were from renewable sources and that it hopes to meet 100 percent by 2020. “Climate change is one of the great challenges of our time, and the time for action is now,” said Cook in 2015 when he announced solar projects in China to encourage his suppliers to go green.
Other Silicon Valley celebrities found themselves at odds with Trump yet again with the Paris Agreement. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter that he will likely leave his posts on two separate presidential advisory councils if the administration abandons the climate agreement.
“Don’t know which way Paris will go, but I’ve done all I can to advise directly to POTUS, through others in [White House] & via councils, that we remain,” Musk tweeted.
Will have no choice but to depart councils in that case

Tesla fired the female engineer who is suing the company over sexism and ‘pervasive harassment’ claims (TSLA)
Tesla has fired AJ Vandermeyden, the female engineer suing the company over claims she experienced “pervasive harassment,” a Tesla spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider.
Vandermeyden’s lawyer, Therese Lawless, is alleging the firing is an act of retaliation, according to The Guardian, which was the first to report the news.
The lawsuit claims Vandermeyden experienced “unwelcome and pervasive harassment” by men on the factory floor, such as cat calls and inappropriate language. The suit says Vandermeyden was denied promotions over men who were “equally or less qualified” than her.
Tesla said it launched an independent investigation into Vandermeyden’s claims and found them to be unsubstantiated.
“After we carefully considered the facts on multiple occasions and were absolutely convinced that Ms. Vandermeyden’s claims were illegitimate, we had no choice but to end her employment at Tesla,” a Tesla spokesperson told Business Insider.
The investigation was conducted in 2016 by Anne Hilbert, a partner at Employment Matters Counseling & Consulting, a law firm in Palo Alto, California.
Tesla said Vandermeyden was promoted to different engineering roles at the company despite lacking an engineering degree.
“The termination was based on Ms. Vandermeyden behaving in what the evidence indicates is a fundamentally false and misleading manner, not as a result of retaliation for the lawsuit,” the Tesla spokesperson said.
Allegations of sexism in the workplace are continuing to crop up at Silicon Valley companys.
Former Uber engineer Susan Fowler said she experienced sexual harassment and gender bias at the ride-hailing company in a personal blog post in February, prompting an internal investigation. The Department of Labor is currently suing Google over claims it underpays female employees.
