South Korea ETF Rises: New President, New Era

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Liberal Moon Jae-in  declared victory in South Korea’s presidential election, replacing conservative President Park Geun-hye, who was ousted in a corruption scandal.

The iShares MSCI South Korea Capped exchange-traded fund (EWY), up 1.4% Tuesday, was at a new 52-week high in morning trading, as was the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM). Today’s presidential election results may indicate closer ties between South Korea and volatile North Korea, and weaker links to the United States, MarketWatch reports, adding:

“Moon, a 64-year-old former student activist, human rights lawyer, lawmaker and presidential aide has said that South Korea needs to learn to say “no” to the U.S. Exit polls indicated 41.4% of voters picked Moon, an 18.1-percentage-point margin over his next closest rival, Hong Joon-pyo, a conservative from impeached President Park Geun-hye’s party …”

At the end of April, President Donald Trump said he may cancel a free-trade agreement with South Korea and that “a major, major conflict” with North Korea is possible. On the same day, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. is open to talks with North Korea and is not seeking regime change there, MarketWatch reported.

Emerging Markets Or China Correction? Hedge Your Bets

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Bank of America Merrill Lynch suggests to use derivatives to bet on lower prices for emerging market equities because their near-record performance is not sustainable and paying for this insurance isn’t expensive.

BofA, in a report published Monday, suggested buying cheap emerging market equity puts. The owner of a put has the right, but not an obligation, to sell an underlying security at a specific price and date. Translation: a lot of investors are hedging their emerging market investments with the option to sell. Why? The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets exchange-traded fund (EEM) up 25% over the past 12 months, and up nearly 16% just in 2017. The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Asia ETF (EEMA) is up 28% over the past year, and up nearly 20% this year.

The EEM ETF is at a fresh 52-week high today, as is the iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI) and the iShares MSCI South Korea Capped ETF (EWY), with today’s presidential election results indicating closer ties to North Korea and weaker links to the United States, MarketWatch reports. BofA’s global equity derivatives research team writes:

“In spite of the ongoing correction in the commodity complex and emerging market equities’ historically strong correlation to commodities, investors continue to push emerging market equites higher. Positioning recently jumped to 5 year highs, and the MSCI EM Index posted its largest volatility-adjusted outperformance vs. commodities in the past 10 years. While EM equities appear increasingly vulnerable to a commodity-induced near term correction, the volatility market remains extremely sanguine with short-dated implied vol rarely trading cheaper and EEM puts screening as the best equity hedge against commodity drawdowns. Hence we believe EEM puts are significantly undervalued to hedge or capture potential emerging market equity downside. For instance, a long EEM Aug 39.5/37 put spread costs indicatively 66c (1.6%), with comparable put spreads cheaper less than 1% of the time in the past 8 years.”

Barron’s options columnist Steven Sears noted in his latest subscription column, Has the Best Investment Of 2017 Already Peaked?, that rising interest rates and weak commodity prices could pressure fast-growing and volatile emerging market equities. Of particular concern: the EM correlation to economic weakness in China. Chinese equities account for a quarter of the underlying emerging market index. However, so many investors have shorted the Deutsche X-Trackers Harvest CSI 300 Index ETF (ASHR) that it is hard for brokers to meet the demand, Sears writes.

The chief Asia-Pacific economist at NatixisAlicia Garcia-Herrero, said Tuesday that China’s resilience has been impressive, and ASEAN nations’ growth has been even more resilient. “I don’t expect a crisis any time soon,” she said in a Bloomberg Radio interview. She has noted China’s willingness to depreciate the yuan and use “extensive instruments” to  stabilize the economy, though she acknowledged “massive mis-allocations.”

Artificial Intelligence and OCR

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Currently I am only able to locate companies that are using images (pictures) for AI. Is anyone aware of companies or individuals that are using AI to comb through PDF documents (blueprints, schematics, diagrams etc…). I am interested in mining data out of these types of documents for analytical purposes, but I haven’t found anyone doing it. Any help is appreciated (including other sub-reddits this might be more applicable too).
