Leading global medical technology company, Becton, Dickinson and Company BDX, popularly known as BD, recently announced that it has entered into an agreement with FlowJo, LLC, a life science informatics and data analysis company. Per the agreement, the companies would offer the cloud-based platform, FlowJo Envoy alongwith BD FACSymphony, a cell analyzer for their customers.
Stock Performance
Becton has had an impressive run on the bourse over the past one month. The company gained roughly 3.91%, which is higher than the Zacks categorized Medical/Dental-Supplies sub industry’s addition of almost 3.41%. The current level compares favorably with the S&P 500’s return of 1.26% over the same time frame. This, together with a long-term expected earnings growth rate of 11.29%, instills confidence in investors.
The estimate revision trend seems favorable for the stock at this moment, with one estimate moving up in the last 60 days and no downward movement. The above factor indicates chances of a recovery. The current year estimate for the stock stands at 53 cents per share.
Coming back to the news, the collaboration is a sound move from the two companies. The announcement was made at the 32nd Congress of the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston.
The collaboration would bring together Becton’s proprietary FACSymphony cell analyzer and FlowJo Envoy to enable scientists to collaborate, coordinate and execute high-parameter single-cell experiments seamlessly in real-time. This would enable the users to achieve a measurement of up to 50 different characteristics of a single cell. The combination will also enable researchers to improve their workflow, collaborations and store their data in the cloud and share single-cell analysis information in real-time.
Based in Franklin Lakes, NJ, Becton, Dickinson is a medical technology company engaged principally in the development, manufacture and sale of medical devices, instrument systems and reagents. Going forward, BD’s focus on product launches is a significant catalyst in our view. Additionally, its expansion plans, especially in the emerging overseas markets and the acquisition-driven strategy hold considerable promise.
On the flipside, lower demand for healthcare products, intensifying competition, significant exposure to foreign exchange volatility and higher debt levels pose major headwinds.
Zacks Rank & Stocks to Consider
Becton carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
Better-ranked medical stocks are Align Technology, Inc. ALGN, Inogen, Inc. INGN and Accelerate Diagnostics, Inc. AXDX. Defense behemoth General Dynamics Corp.’s GD business division, Electric Boat Corp., secured a modification contract worth $25.1 million from the U.S. Navy to provide additional Long Lead Time Material (LLTM) related to fiscal 2019 Virginia Class Submarine (SSNs 802 and 803).
Details of the Deal
Per the agreement, Electric Boat will provide LLTM for steam and electric plant components, and miscellaneous hull, mechanical and electrical system components. The contractor will also offer efforts in connection with the main propulsion unit and ship service turbine generator.
Work related to this deal is scheduled to be completed by Jan 2018. Majority of the work will be executed in Coatesville, PN, while the rest in various locations across the U.S. The company will utilize fiscal 2017 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds.
A Brief Note on Virginia-Class Submarines
The Virginia-class program comprises nuclear-powered fast-attack submarines serving the Navy. These submarines are designed for a broad spectrum of open-ocean and littoral missions. Notably, Virginia-class submarines are designed for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) operations as well as mine warfare.
Current Scenario
Attack submarines are designed to seek and destroy enemy submarines as well as surface ships. Currently, the Navy has three classes of nuclear-powered attack submarines — Virginia-class, Ohio-class and Los Angeles-class. These submarines will be operational through 2070.
Our Take
As one of the only two contractors in the world equipped to build nuclear-powered submarines, General Dynamics enjoys a dominant position as a Navy contractor. The company continues to be a prime contractor for the development of Virginia-class submarines, with Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc. HII acting as the subcontractor.
The fiscal year 2017 spending bill, approved by Obama government, includes $582.7 billion in funding for the Pentagon, which comprise $71.4 billion for R&D and $8.1 billion for submarines (with over $40 billion in the next five years). We believe this will definitely drive growth at General Dynamics’ nuclear submarines division, going forward.
General Dynamics’ revenue exposure is spread over a broad portfolio of products and services that will keep the overall growth momentum steady. Electric Boat is a unit of Marine Systems, which is a leading U.S. shipbuilder, designing, building and supporting a diverse portfolio of ships for the Navy and commercial customers. In partnership with the Navy, Electric Boat has been successfully pursuing its goal to reduce ship costs while focusing on improving overall efficiency.
Price Movement
Shares of General Dynamics have rallied 43.8% in the last one year, outperforming the Zacks categorized Aerospace-Defense industry’s gain of 25.4%. This could be because General Dynamics consistently maintains a strategic alliance with the U.S. Department of Defense, which allows it to enjoy a steady flow of contracts. Consistent deal wins also allow its peers like Lockheed Martin Corp. LMT and Northrop Grumman Corp. NOC keep up their industry-leading performance.
Zacks Rank
General Dynamics currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

LONDON — The Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott has stood down from Labour’s campaign due to “ill health” a spokesperson said this morning.
Abbott, who is a key lieutenant to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, pulled out of a planned interview on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour on Tuesday claiming illness.
A Labour spokesperson said this morning that “Jeremy Corbyn, Leader of the Labour Party, has asked Lyn Brown to stand in for Diane Abbott as Shadow Home Secretary for the period of her ill health.”
The announcement follows Abbott apparently falling victim to an email prank on Tuesday in which a person posing as Corbyn’s communications director Seumas Milne asked her to add “colour” to “the illness story”.
is @HackneyAbbott really ill todayl? You decide. I chatted with her earlier today. GENUINE exchange. I was being Corbyn’s media advisor. http://pic.twitter.com/FNBGRBTWMY
— EMAIL PRANKSTER. (@SINON_REBORN) June 6, 2017
Abbott told the prankster, who previously duped Bank of England chief Mark Carney, that: “I am not sure what colour I can add. I have always enjoyed good health until the last few years. And diabetes, in itself, would not stop me doing Women’s Hour. I am worried about telling untruths about my health which are easily disproved.”
Asked about the exchange, a Labour spokesperson told Business Insider: “We’re not commenting on fake emails”.
Shadow trade secretary Barry Gardiner told Talk Radio that Abbott has a serious “long term” health condition but added that he didn’t know what it was.
“Diane is not well,” he said.
“I don’t have her medical condition. I’m given to understand she’s been diagnosed with her medical condition, it’s a long-term condition, and she’s been coming to terms with that.”
Abbott tweeted on Wednesday that she would “rejoin the fray soon.”
Touched by all the messages of support. Still standing! Will rejoin the fray soon. Vote Labour!
— Diane Abbott (@HackneyAbbott) June 7, 2017
“Touched by all the messages of support. Still standing! Will rejoin the fray soon. Vote Labour!” she said.
The Conservative party has focused heavily on Abbott during this campaign following a series of disastrous media appearances.
Both Labour and Liberal Democrat sources have told Business Insider that she has become a major liability for Labour’s campaign with voters repeatedly raising her performance on both the doorstep and in focus groups.
Abbott’s supporters believe the attacks against her are a deliberate “dog-whistle” campaign designed to play on racism and sexism towards her. Asked about Abbott this morning, Corbyn said the criticism of her had been “unfair”.
“She’s not [been] well for a couple of days and she’s taking a break from the campaign,” he told the BBC.
“She has received unfair levels of abuse, not just recently, but over many years.”
“I will talk to her later today.”
