To Brad McMillan, understanding the technica fundamentals of investing is just one part of a larger puzzle.
The chief investment officer at Commonwealth Financial Network, which oversees about $114 billion, McMillan thinks it’s crucial for aspiring money managers to also understand the human side of things. And that involves brushing up on history and reading the classics, most notably the works of William Shakespeare.
In an interview with Business Insider, McMillan made a bear market prediction and spoke about valuations, investor complacency and President Donald Trump’s lessening impact. He also broke down how up-and-coming money managers should prepare themselves for the behavioral side of the investment equation.
Here’s what McMillan had to say (emphasis ours):
While technical knowledge is essential, a broader knowledge base is what takes you to the next level. Read history, read literature, understand how people think, and how they’ve acted in the past. Markets are all about people. Technical knowledge alone is not enough.
You need to read [Edward] Gibbon’s “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.” Read Shakespeare. There’s more in Shakespeare about power, decision-making, ambition, and how people are blinded by their own needs that’s so incredibly applicable to the investment process. To see it in that context is something that makes it real. It’s not about the P/E ratio. Sure, you need to know that. But ultimately, it’s about the people that are investing.
If you read writing done by Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger, and Howard Marks, they obviously have the technical fundamentals in place. But what they’re focused on is how to think, how to analyze a situation and how to understand where we are in light of where we’ve been. In order to do that, you need a much broader context than the investment universe.

President Donald Trump went after Germany in an early morning tweet on Tuesday, adding to apparently strained relations with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military,” said Trump. “Very bad for U.S. This will change.”
The tweet comes following remarks by Chancellor Merkel on Monday that appeared to stress the need to pivot away from the US and UK.
“The times in which [Germany] could fully rely on others are partly over. I have experienced this in the last few days,” Merkel said during the event. “We Europeans really have to take our destiny into our own hands.”
Merkel reiterated the sentiment on Tuesday, saying that relations with the US are of “outstanding importance,” but Germany must also look elsewhere.
The tweet by Trump reflects common criticisms by the president of trade deficits. Trump has used trade deficits with China, Mexico, Canada, and now Germany as a reflection of “bad trade deals” that the US is engaged in. According to the US Census Bureau, the US had a $64.9 billion goods trade deficit with Germany in 2016.
Trump also criticized Germany’s trade surplus during a meeting with EU officials on Thursday, according to the German news outlet Der Spiegel. Trump said the country was “very bad” on trade and took issue with German cars being imported into the US.
The comments were confirmed by National Economic Council director and White House adviser Gary Cohn. “He said they’re very bad on trade, but he doesn’t have a problem with Germany,” Cohn told reporters at the G-7 summit in Sicily.
Additionally, Trump has frequently criticized members of NATO, including Germany, for not hitting a threshold of 2% GDP spending towards the alliance.
While Trump painted this as a debt “owed” to NATO in a speech with allies on Thursday, foreign policy experts have pointed out that the agreement says the 2% of GDP is supposed to be paid by each country to its own military and is a target to be reached by 2024.

Communication is the most important means by which a person or organization express themselves. Communicative ability is difficult to suppress. At the individual level, there are talented communicators, and there are the effective communicators. A talented communicator can be telegenic, and can bring in only style. Substance may be lacking in the communication of a talented communicator.
On the other hand, the effective communicator is one who communicates with conviction, trust, respect, understanding, empathy and resolution. This is the kind of communicator organizations need.
To be an effective communicator; the communicator need not have the charisma or attractiveness of the talented communicator. Such a communicator does not need to even possess strong vocabulary or a grandiloquent or articulated style, or even the ability to be able to speak in public, or that of being a good listener. The effective communicator simply needs to understand how to read people, realize that communication is both receiving and broadcasting, and be able to adapt to many unique and stressful situations when it comes to communicating with others.
A learning session on how to be an effective communicator
All these behaviors and traits can be imbibed and implemented through proper coaching. The ways of doing this form the core of a webinar that TrainHR, a highly acclaimed provider of professional trainings for the HR industry; will be organizing. To enroll for this webinar, just visit TrainHR
The expert at this webinar is David Rohlander, author of the Amazon-bestseller, “The CEO Code”. With five sixths of his new clients coming from referrals, David is the ideal expert to impart learning on the many aspects of effective communication.
Understanding and integrity are the soul of effective communication
David will seek to offer clarity on a simple, but potentially one the most troubling questions in the minds of many people: “How to communicate effectively”. In exploring the critical elements of the effective communicator; David will teach how participants can develop these traits and how they can use communication to accomplish great things through other people.
David will explain his conviction that understanding is at the root of effective communication. This, to him, is the cornerstone of effective communication. He will expand on this thought during the webinar, earmarking a considerable part of it to making participants understand the role of understanding. When participants imbibe this trait into their communication, they will be able to read people, develop awareness of the self and inculcate technics and methods to practice.
Carry honesty and conviction in words
When people learn to communicate effectively, it brings with it important qualities such as being able to lead, and to persuade and carry conviction, which makes people believe in them and their ideas. This gives them a prominent position in the minds of listeners, because it equips them with the power to practice integrity. Their words carry weight when they are uttered with belief, honesty and goodwill.
The hallmark of effective communication is integrity in the words, which is what separates the effective speakers from the talented ones. If this important quality is lacking, they are going to lose the trust and faith that people repose in them. This will make them no different from politicians.
This webinar will offer important learning to professionals across the entire spectrum of organizations, for whom communication is a key part of their work and success. C-Level executives such as CEO, CFO, COO, Vice Presidents and Regional Managers, managers and supervisors, newly promoted managers, and high potential employees being groomed for Leadership & Promotions will benefit in a large manner from this webinar.
At this webinar, David will cover the following areas:

The Russian ruble is soaring after Saudi Arabia and Russia said they support supply cuts lasting into 2018.
The petrocurrency is up by 1.5% at 56.2607 per dollar as of 7:50 a.m. ET.
Meanwhile, Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, is higher by 2.9% at $52.33 per barrel, and WTI crude oil is up by 3% at $49.27 per barrel.
The ruble has historically tracked oil prices given the Russian economy’s heavy reliance on the commodity.
Energy ministers from Russia and Saudi Arabia said Monday that supply cuts should be extended until March 2018, which would be longer than the proposed six-month extension.
As for the rest of the world, here’s the scoreboard as of 7:54 a.m. ET:
