£100 million has now been bet on the general election

LONDON — Gamblers have bet £100 million on the outcome of Thursday’s UK General Election, according to new stats.

BonusCodeBets.co.uk works closely with bookmakers and has collected figures from William Hill, Ladbrokes, Bet365.com, Coral, BetFred, and Betway on political betting.

As recently as last Friday, just £30 million had been bet on the outcome of the election but bookmakers have seen a surge in interest in the final week before the election. BonusCodeBets.co.uk says much of the recent money has gone on Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

Theresa May remains the favourite to win, with bookmakers giving the Prime Minister an average of 80% chance of returning to Downing Street. However, Jeremy Corbyn’s odds have improved in recent weeks thanks to his strong campaign, with bookmakers increasing the probability of a Labour win from 15% to 28%, BonusCodeBets.co.uk says.

The late surge in political betting means 2017’s election has easily surpassed 2015, when £25 million was bet on the election, and the 2010 vote, when £40 million was staked on the outcome.

Alexander Kostin of BonusCodeBets.co.uk says in an email: “Over the last couple of years, we’ve experienced a significant increase in people getting involved in political betting. In fact, over the last few weeks, not only have we experienced an increase of over 50% in people looking to place bets ahead of the General Election, but the amount wagered has more than doubled to the money placed on the candidates in the 2015 Election.”

The biggest single bet is a £240,000 wager on Theresa May to win. Other notable bets include a £5 flutter on the Liberal Democrats to win outright made by a Londoner at odds of 1,000/1.

The biggest market on election day is whether there will be a hung parliament or a Tory majority, BonusCodeBets.co.uk says.

Traders are cranking up their bets against Snap (SNAP)

http://ift.tt/2n76gGk

Snap Snapchat IPO NYSE Spectacles

Traders haven’t been this bearish on Snap since the period immediately following its IPO.

The ratio of bearish put contracts on Snap’s stock to bullish calls is 1.7-to-1, the highest since March 17, only the fifth day that Snap options were available to be traded.

After an initial shorting frenzy that pushed the ratio as high as 3-to-1, bearishness leveled off for a couple of months. But now that Snap has been drawing the ire of analysts across Wall Street due to concerns over user growth, pessimism is once again mounting.

The most recent criticism came from Nomura on Wednesday. Looking at data around downloads on the Snapchat app, analyst Anthony DiClemente highlighted slowing daily-average user growth through the first two months of the second quarter.

DiClemente doesn’t expect near-term monetization growth to pick back up, and also noted an acceleration in downloads for Instagram. He warned against competitor growth at a time when Snap’s user expansion is slowing.

JPMorgan got in on the action on Monday, lowering its price target on the company. The firm also has concerns over fewer people flocking to the platform than expected. They estimated that only 8 million users will join Snapchat in the second quarter of 2017, missing the previous forecast of 10 million.

Out of all of the underwriters that participated in Snap’s IPO, none have been more downbeat than JPMorgan, which received the third-biggest share of stock to sell in the offering. The firm lowered its price target on the stock after a disappointing first quarter earnings report last month.

Investors are set for a bumpy ride as sterling volatility jumps while Britain goes to the polls

http://ift.tt/2n9v8x6

Cash point

LONDON — Implied volatility in the pound has spiked on Thursday as Britain goes to the polls in an election that is projected to be much tighter than had initially been expected.

Polls published overnight suggest that Theresa May’s Conservative Party hold a lead of between six and eight points over Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party, although outliers suggest that lead could be as big as 13 points, or as small as one point.

The most important poll, however, will be released at 10.00 p.m. BST (5.00 p.m. ET) when the UK’s broadcasters release their jointly commissioned exit poll.

Until then, how Britain voted is anybody’s guess, and as a result, overnight sterling volatility — a measure of how much the British pound is expected to fluctuate — has jumped above 30%, hitting levels similar to those seen prior to the 2015 general election and ahead of the Scottish Independence referendum.

That remains well below the 80% hit in the run up to the Brexit referendum last June.

Here’s the chart, courtesy of Reuters financial markets columnist Jamie McGeever:

As UK polls open, overnight sterling volatility soars to 30%. That’s on a par with 2015 election & #indyref, but nowhere near #Brexit (80%) http://pic.twitter.com/f3Xy3Na7ux

— Jamie McGeever (@ReutersJamie) June 8, 2017

What happens to the pound after the vote is still something of an unknown, and depends massively on how the UK votes. For example, a strong Conservative Party majority is projected by most forecasters as a positive for the pound, while a hung parliament — in which no party wins a majority of seats — is seen as the worst outcome. That’s because in a hung parliament there would be little to no certainty about who could form a government, and currency markets hate instability.

“A comfortable Conservative win probably would boost sterling to only $1.30, given that it is the main scenario priced-in currently, and some hard Brexit risk will linger regardless of the size of the Tories’ win,” Samuel Tombs of Pantheon Macroeconomics wrote on Wednesday.

“By contrast, we think sterling could fall back to around $1.26, if the Conservatives fail to win more than a handful of extra seats,” he added.

Opinions differ on what might happen to sterling in the event that Labour wins what pre-election opinion polls suggest is an unlikely victory. Some forecasters suggest that sterling could slump on the prospect of Jeremy Corbyn — whose policies would place punitive taxes on the City of London — as prime minister.

Tombs, however, argues that Corbyn’s less aggressive stance on Brexit could be a good thing for sterling.

A surprise Labour win likely would boost sterling this time — in contrast to past precedent — due to the party’s softer Brexit stance. Labour’s manifesto promises to enter negotiations ‘… with a strong emphasis on retaining the benefits of the Single Market and the Customs Union’,” he wrote on Wednesday,
