Navy Ship Named For Gun Violence Survivor Gabrielle Giffords Commissioned

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

The U.S. Navy on Saturday commissioned a warship named for former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), making it the third Navy ship ever to be named after a living woman.

Giffords resigned her House seat in 2012 after surviving an assassination attempt at a grocery story in Tucson, Arizona. Then-Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus contacted Giffords that day to tell her that a warship would be named in her honor. The 418-foot littoral combat ship was built in Mobile, Alabama, and christened by Dr. Jill Biden in 2015.

Democratic heavyweights, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Vice President Joe Biden and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi attended the commissioning. Clinton, Pelosi and Biden honored the former representative for her service in the House, her heroism following the assassination attempt and her dedicated activism since then.

“Indeed throughout the world, and throughout America, there isn’t a name more universally loved, more admired, more respected than the name of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords,” Pelosi said.

The top Democrat commended Giffords for her dedication to active service members and veterans through her work on the House Armed Services Committee. Giffords’ husband, Captain Mark Kelly, was on active duty at the time of her service in the House. He retired from the Navy and NASA shortly after the shooting incident.

“The patriotism and the heroism of Congresswoman Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly embody the highest ideals of our nation,” Pelosi said.

Clinton heralded Giffords as “a truly great American,” saying the former representative came out of the assassination attempt “with grace and faith that is almost hard to imagine.”

“Instead of saying what might be expected and asking the question, ‘why me?’ she said, how can she make the most out of the life, the miracle, that she represented,” Clinton said. “And time and time again she has stood up ready to keep moving forward, to persevere with her trademark humor, kindness and relentless optimism.”

“It’s designed to be agile, quick to adapt, able to swiftly maneuver in the roughest of waters,” Clinton said of the ship. “Every moment of every day that the sailors who man this ship are given the great privilege of defending our country, they only have to look toward this ship’s namesake.”

Giffords called the commissioning “an incredible honor,” and thanked members of the military for their service.

“The U.S.S. Gabrielle Giffords is strong and tough, just like her crew,” she said. “I thought of you in my darkest days. We ask so much of you. Despite danger, you say yes. You make me proud, you make America proud. I will never forget this day or the crew of the U.S.S. Gabrielle Giffords.”

Her remarks were met with rousing applause.

Treasuries Close Modestly Lower But Off Worst Levels

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Treasuries ended Thursday’s trading modestly lower, extending the pullback seen over the course of the previous session.

Bond prices climbed off their worst levels going into the close but remained in negative territory. As a result, the yield on the benchmark ten-year note, which moves opposite of its price, edged up by 1.6 basis points to 2.194 percent.

With the modest increase on the day, the ten-year yield climbed further off the nearly seven-month closing low set on Tuesday.

The continued pullback by treasuries came on the heels of the European Central Bank’s latest monetary policy announcement, with the ECB leaving its benchmark interest rate unchanged.

The ECB said interest rates are expected to remain at their present levels for an extended period of time but dropped any reference to a future rate cut.

In his subsequent statement, ECB President Mario Draghi lowered the outlook for euro area inflation, citing lower oil prices.

Traders also kept an eye on developments on Capitol Hill, where former FBI Director James Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The questioning of Comey came after his statement released by the committee on Wednesday appeared to confirm some recent reports about his interactions with Trump.

The statement included details of a conversation during which Trump seemed to ask Comey to drop an investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s contact with Russian officials.

“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go,” Trump said, according to Comey.

Comey told the committee he took the comment from Trump as a directive but said the determination of whether the request amounted to obstruction of justice would be up to Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

However, Trump’s personal attorney Marc Kasowitz rejected many of Comey’s claims, denying the allegation that the president called for an end of the investigation of Flynn.

The general election in the U.K. also attracted attention, although the outcome will not be known until later in the day.

Meanwhile, the Treasury Department announced the details of next week’s auctions of three-year and ten-year notes and thirty-year bonds.

The Treasury said it plans to sell $24 billion worth of three-year notes and $20 billion worth of ten-year notes next Monday and $12 billion worth of thirty-year bonds next Tuesday.

Results of the U.K. election may impact trading on Friday, while traders are likely to shrug off a report on wholesale inventories in the month of April.

Katy Perry Thinks Taylor Swift Is Trying To ‘Assassinate’ Her Character

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Someone please procure industrial strength cutting pliers because if Katy Perry is chained to the rhythm, then the rest of us are chained to this endless pop music war she’s waging with Taylor Swift. Seriously, at this point we’ve heard more about their feud than any other clash in human history.

Ahead of the release of her new album, “Witness,” on Friday, Perry somehow found some tea left to spill for an interview with NME about why she chose to tell the “truth” about Swift.

Last month, she took a ride with James Corden and ended up revealing how this all started. Apparently, the two got their wires crossed when it came to booking backup dancers for their respective tours. Swift claimed that Perry was poaching her crew, while the “Bon Appetit” singer said she informed the dancers about a potential conflict before Swift’s tour even began.

Regardless, Perry has an album to promote, so, of course, she essentially pulled out a baseball bat and gave this dead horse of a feud one final beat down.

“Well, James Corden makes me and the whole world feel very safe,” Perry said about her decision to address the feud, according to Time. “No one has asked me about my side of the story, and there are three sides of every story: one, two, and the truth.”

A post shared by NME (@nmemagazine) on Jun 8, 2017 at 12:56am PDT

“I mean, I’m not Buddha — things irritate me,” she continued. “I wish that I could turn the other cheek every single time, but I’m also not a pushover, you know? Especially when someone tries to assassinate my character with little girls [her fans]. That’s so messed up!”

Perry is likely referring to Swift’s mega-hit “Bad Blood,” which many have assumed is a thinly-veiled diss track about the pop star. The song was also co-written by prolific pop producer Max Martin, who’s worked with Perry since her “One of the Boys” days, potentially raising a conflict of interest with her longtime collaborator.

“I can’t speak for [Max], but he didn’t know [who ‘Bad Blood’ was about],” she said. “I’m not supposed to tell him what he can and can’t do. I’m very fair; I’m super-duper fair and I’m not one of those people who’s like, ‘You can’t do that because I don’t like that person’. Just, like, you do you, make your own choices… I’m not his mother.”

Haven’t had your fill? Well, Swift should be releasing a new album any day now, so get ready for another media cycle about this mess.
