China April industrial profits up 14 percent but slowing pace stokes economy worries

http://ift.tt/1jUfBeX

China April industrial profits up 14 percent but slowing pace stokes economy worriesProfits earned by Chinese industrial firms rose 14.0 percent in April from a year earlier, official data showed on Saturday, slowing from March’s pace and adding to concerns that the world’s second-largest economy may be losing steam. Profits in April rose to 572.78 billion yuan ($83.59 billion), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on its website. A building boom, fuelled by a government infrastructure spree and a heated housing market, has boosted demand and prices for materials from steel to cement, giving China’s long ailing “smokestack” industries more cashflow to chip away at a mountain of debt.

When it comes to Growth, the Coach can’t want it more than the Player

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J
You know the old adage, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink?  Well the same goes for your employees and their growth and development.

As a senior leader, it is your job to provide opportunities for your employees to learn and grow, and to make their learning accessible, actionable and accountable.  However, if your employee is not engaged by your company and culture, then you can’t force them to learn and grow. Read more about how to engage your employees with Servant Leadership.

Here are a couple things you can ask yourself and examine to have better engagement in your organization:

  1. Did it start with your hiring practices?  I think today, more than ever, it is critical to hire employees for their interpersonal skills over their technical ones.  As long as they have basic abilities, many technical skills can be trained.  However, many interpersonal skills such as friendliness, fun, and authenticity cannot be trained, they are often ingrained in the person from an early age and they’ve either got it or they don’t.  Perhaps this person is just not a good cultural fit for your organization.
  2. Are they not engaged by your organization’s culture? This is where you can step in and re-examine your culture and how you can enhance it to make a better overall experience for your employees.  This might include offering better benefits, examining outdated policies and procedures (e.g. strict dress codes, flex time, and vacation policies) and whether they feel recognized and valued in your organization.
  3. Are you recognizing and rewarding them for their exceptional performance? If your employees were consistently providing exceptional performance but you did not recognize them for it, why would they even try to grow and give you their discretionary energy and motivation.  You can enhance this experience for your employees with both formal and informal rewards and recognition.  The best organizations recognize their employees at every touch point.  Non-monetary recognition is also a big motivator for employees, and can include acknowledging an employee at a team meeting in front of their peers, sending them a personalized thank you email or sending them a formal award certificate for going above and beyond their duties.  You can also recognize them with monetary rewards such as spot cards, bonuses, incentives, and points in their employee performance portal that they can redeem for merchandise and gift cards.

There is a critical overlap between employee engagement and learning development.  When your talent are engaged with recognition and enabled with skills and competencies from learning, they will be able to provide better service internally with their colleagues and externally with your customers, which will result in customers (and employees) who stay longer, buy more and positively refer others. The most expensive college in every state

http://ift.tt/2kBPONN

University of Notre Dame

College is expensive — and it’s only increasing.

Tuition at both public and private schools continues to rise at a fast clip, and Americans collectively owe more than $1.3 trillion in student loan debt.

But not all states are created equal. While Harvey Mudd College, the most expensive school in California, runs $69,717 per year, the University of Wyoming, the most expensive school in its state, costs only $26,535 — even less for local students.

Using data from the College Board‘s Trends in College Pricing and The Chronicle of Higher Education‘s helpful interactive chart, Business Insider rounded up the most expensive college in every state. The ranking uses tuition data from the 2016-17 academic year and looks at each school’s full sticker price — published tuition and required fees, as well as room and board — rather than tuition numbers alone.

All states were ranked according to out-of-state tuition where applicable.

You can officially order Tesla’s solar roof — here’s everything you need to know (TSLA)

http://ift.tt/2g0GAJ1

elon musk solar roof

Tesla’s solar roof has officially arrived — at least some versions of it.

Tesla began accepting orders for its smooth glass and textured glass solar shingle options Wednesday afternoon. The company’s Tuscan glass and French slate shingles, however, won’t be available for purchase until 2018.

Tesla unveiled its solar roof in late October, about a month before the company acquired SolarCity in a $2.1-billion deal.

Here’s everything we know about the new solar roof:

Tesla will eventually offer four types of shingles to match different housing aesthetics in an effort to get homeowners to ditch clunky solar-panel add-ons in favor of a beautiful roof.

Tesla announced Wednesday that the typical homeowner will pay $21.85 per square foot for the solar roof. For a 3,000-square-foot home, that would amount to $65,000. Customers must place a $1,000 deposit to order the solar roof.

You can buy the solar roof here.

Musk originally said that the solar roof will cost less than a traditional roof, even before factoring in the price of electricity. But the company back-peddled slightly on that promise Wednesday.
