Senator Demands More Info About EPA Chief’s Refusal To Ban Brain-Damaging Pesticide

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

WASHINGTON — Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) has requested all documents related to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt’s decision to go against the scientific recommendation of his own agency and refuse to ban a widely used pesticide that’s been linked to learning disabilities in children.

In a Friday letter to Pruitt, Carper, a ranking member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, said he is “troubled” by the agency chief’s order to allow chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate insecticide that’s been used since the 1960s, to remain on the market for agricultural use. Pruitt “did not present any new scientific or legal analysis” to justify the decision, Carper noted.

“The previous finding to ban chlorpyrifos was based on extensive data, models and research developed by industry, government and academic scientists,” Carper wrote. “Absent such justification, this decision to lift the proposed ban could undermine the trust the public has in the agency to keep its food, water and air safe.”

In November 2015, under the Obama administration, the EPA proposed to permanently ban the use of the chemical on food crops, citing potential risks to human health. The move stemmed from a 2007 petition filed by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Pesticide Action Network North America.

In announcing his reversal, Pruitt said the proposed ban relied largely on studies “whose application is novel and uncertain.” He claimed that his decision was about “returning to using sound science in decision-making — rather than predetermined results.”

Critics quickly condemned Pruitt and President Donald Trump, accusing them of valuing corporate profits over public health. And environmental groups, including NRDC and Earthjustice, promised to fight the EPA in court.

Chlorpyrifos, also known by its trade name Lorsban, is used in nearly 100 countries on more than 50 different crops, including corn, soybeans, cranberries and broccoli. It was largely banned for at-home use in the U.S. in 2000, but continues to be widely used on thousands of American farms.

Dow Chemical Co., the chemical’s producer, says it “remains confident that authorized uses of chlorpyrifos products offer wide margins of protection for human health and safety.” However, even low-dose exposure to organophosphates, particularly in the womb, has been found to harm brain development in children, leading to higher risk of disorders like autism.

The Washington Post reported Friday that a new EPA plan calls for laying off 25 percent of the federal agency’s staff and eliminating dozens of programs, including pesticide safety.

Pruitt, the former attorney general of Oklahoma, is a longtime critic of the EPA who denies the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change. A recent email dump revealed his close relationship with the oil, gas and utility companies he’s now tasked with regulating.

Carper has asked the agency to provide him with copies of all documents and communications related to Pruitt’s decision on chlorpyrifos by April 28.

You can read Carper’s full letter here.

Some Effective Self Storage Tips for Keeping Personal and Household Items

Some Effective Self Storage Tips for Keeping Personal and Household Items

 By Lauren Bracy

People often find it very hard to store several of their personal belongings at home, mainly if there are too many items in the closets and drawers. But the knowledge of self storage of household items is very useful in everyday life, even more when one is shifting home from one place to another. The efficient storage systems prove to be highly beneficial while living in small apartments, where belongings may apparently seem to be more than the space available. Though the storage depends on the personal choice of a person, there are certain basic tips that come handy in all types of storages.

Few useful self storage ideas for preserving the household goods

  • Storage of books and papers – Often people need to store some old books and diaries of childhood as sweet memories. So, they should store these objects securely in small boxes of suitable sizes and sealed with moisture-resistant tapes, to keep in storerooms or lofts for ages. The old photo albums should be packed in similar acid-free boxes, away from all touches of direct sunlight and moisture; the insertion of tissue papers between the photo albums and books or newspaper clippings preserve them better, by absorbing all humidity in the air.
  • Storage of wooden furniture – If a new home is smaller than the earlier one, it is better to store away a few lesser important furniture pieces, to accommodate in the new place. Firstly, the furniture piece should be cleaned of all dust and dirt, rubbed with a good quality polishes and then dismantle it completely, if possible. If dissembling is not possible, then wrap thick sheets of newspaper or blanket around that object, to prevent the entry of moisture and the possible growth of moulds.  Then these furniture pieces can be placed against the walls, in an erect position. The glass parts of the furniture, like the mirror of a dressing table should be well packed with cardboard, to prevent possibility of breakage. The metal parts of furniture should be rubbed well with oil or grease, to prevent the formation of any rust. Only the plastic furniture pieces can have wrapped in plastic sheets for storage, as plastic cannot be harmed by moisture.
  • Storage of electronic appliances – When there is less space in a room, some rarely used electronic appliances can be packed up in their actual boxes in which they were bought. If any appliance has multiple parts that can be separated, all these pieces can be wrapped in vacuumed plastics and thermal sheets, which can be stored safely for ages and care should be taken to keep these items in perfectly working condition, whenever required.
  • Self storage of seasonal objects – There are many things that are used only once a year; like Christmas decorations, lights and statues. The effective way of self storage of these articles is to keep them in the small boxes that can be safely kept over the cupboards or in the attics. The small ornamentations should be stored in small egg cartons, as these cartons are quite hard and durable. The decorative lights should be packed in old newspapers and kept in small storage boxes.
  • Protection of different kinds of tools – The metal tools should be cleaned and rubbed with grease, to protect from rusting or corrosion. Steel parts when exposed to even very little moisture and exposed to air overtime beings to rust. A coat of grease prevents that exposure, hence prevent rust. Larger tools, like the spades or shovels should be wrapped together, to store safely. The power tools are better stored away in the boxes in which they were purchased, after oiling the metal joints of these useful objects.
  • Storing clothes and beddings – The dresses of regular uses should be hung out in the wardrobes on the hangers, to keep the air circulating through them. The extra clothing can be folded neatly and stored in the drawers of the wardrobes. The excess beddings should also be stored in the drawers of the dressers or divans, with insect repellents tucked in between the folds.

Above mentioned are the useful self storage ideas for preserving the household goods.

Easy and Smart Ways to Save Electricity at Home

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Easy and Smart Ways to Save Electricity at Home

By Diana Smith

In recent years saving energy has become an important aspect of people’s everyday life. It will not only save you some money, but you will help save our environment. Here are some simple yet effective ways you can save electricity at home. Take a look.

Use natural light

If you’re blessed with a lot of natural light during the day, use it. Open the blinds and shutters and let the sunshine in. Make the brightest room in the house the living room, and you can spend the day without using any artificial light. Use white and light colors for the walls to make the best use of natural light.

Use more candles

Candles not only make for pleasant homey atmosphere, they can cut off few bucks from your electricity bill. Reserve a night or two per week to turn the lights off and bring out the candles. The slow-burning candles burn the whole evening and cast a enough warm light. You can use these nights to read or spend some quality time with your family or friends. You can tell stories, talk about your day or simply have fun relaxing before bed. Be sure to explain your kids and youngsters how to deal with fire, and keep all fire starting items in a safe place.

Unplug unused appliances

Plugged-in appliances and electronic devices continue to consume some electricity even when they are turned off. Computers probably use up the most energy in the household, so unplug them when you’re finished using them. The same goes for your TV, sound system, coffee maker, toaster, microwave. Even though small appliances use up less energy, it still adds up to a nice amount. Try to remember to unplug unused devices and save some money over time.

Get Energy Star appliances

10 or 20 years ago appliance manufacturers didn’t care how much electricity their products used as long as they worked fine. Today, many manufacturers put energy consumption at the top of their list of priorities. Most new appliances have an energy efficient cycle or settings, and they are made so that they use electricity efficiently. If you have an old appliance that needs replacing, try looking for the model with Energy Star label, or a similar label of energy efficiency.

Use LEDs

Replace your old lights with LEDs or CFL bulbs. Old bulbs release a lot of energy in the form of heath, so they make the space warmer resulting in increased air conditioning use. LEDs and CFLs are much more energy-friendly and they save a lot of energy over time. LEDs are the most efficient, since they last longer, give brighter light and consume less electricity. LED suppliers like Superlight can equip your home with LEDs from the basement to the roof. This small investment will undoubtedly save you money over time.

Properly insulate your home

If your home isn’t properly insulated, you’re basically flushing money down the drain. Your home is releasing cold air in the summer and warm air in the winter, resulting in you having to turn up the air conditioning even higher. Check for cracks around the windows and doors, in your basement, attic, or anywhere where you think you can be leaking energy. You can hire a contractor to examine the space for leaks and decide whether you need additional insulation or just simple door seals and caulk to close up all the cracks.

With these tip and tricks you’ll save a significant amount of money a year, and help our environment in many ways. It doesn’t require many sacrifices, but the rewards are plentiful. Save electricity and leave your children a better and brighter tomorrow.

Global Vehicle to Grid Market 2017-2021: Market Analysis and Forecasts by Technavio

http://ift.tt/2ov8rYY

LONDON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#energy–The global
vehicle to grid (V2G) market
is expected to grow at a CAGR of
more than 18% during the forecast period, according to Technavio’s
latest market research.

In this market research report, Technavio
covers the market outlook and growth prospects of the global vehicle
to grid
market for 2017-2021. The market is
further categorized into two segments based on technology. These
segments are power electronics and software, of which the
power electronics segment accounted for more than 88% of the market
share in 2016.

“The need to reduce GHG emissions and develop energy independence is
leading to the rise in the adoption of efficient electric cars,
which in turn, is driving the market. It is expected that Tesla and
Nissan will launch EVs with V2G capability during the forecast period.
This will help the market grow in double digits as the technology will
move from the pilot to the commercialization phase, making V2G a
mainstream application
,” says Thanikachalam Chandrasekaran, a lead smart
grid
research expert from Technavio.

Technavio’s energy
research analysts segment the global vehicle to grid market into the
following regions:

  • Americas
  • APAC
  • EMEA

V2G market in Americas

The Americas is the leading region for V2G technologies, with the US
being the major contributor to the growth. This growth is attributed to
rapid investments in the development and deployment of V2G
infrastructure
. This was coupled with aggressive government
strategies and targets to stimulate sales of battery electric vehicle
(BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEVs) in the region.
Integrating EVs into the grid can save cost to utilities as well as help
offset the overall ownership cost of EV owners.

sections of the report including the market size and forecast, drivers,
challenges, trends, and more.

V2G market in APAC

APAC has the fastest growing V2G market among other regions. The demand
for V2G technologies will largely be driven by the need for improving
the environment and energy security in some of the fast-growing
economies in APAC, such as China and India. Governments of these
countries are investing heavily in the deployment of smart grids that
will enable two-way communication between the grid and EVs.

“Investments in smart grid and benefits such as tax exemptions for
the construction of charging stations coupled with subsidies for
the purchase of EVs will drive the demand for EVs. This, in turn, will
fuel the grid integration technologies in the region,”
says
Thanikachalam.

V2G market in EMEA

The transition to smart grid systems, the evolution of EVs stimulated by
the development of vehicle batteries, and aggressive policies in
renewable energy are some of the drivers for the V2G market in Europe.
Large-scale deployments of smart grid technologies such as smart meters
will enable vehicle grid integration (VGI) and increase the share of
renewable power in the region. This will drive the need for technologies
that will enable grid integration to manage renewable power generation.
VGI demonstration projects are taking shape in countries such as Denmark
and Germany that have a large amount of renewable power generation.

The top vendors in the global vehicle to grid market as highlighted in
this market research analysis are:

4 Terrific Ways to Keep Your Home Energy Efficient

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

4 Terrific Ways to Keep Your Home Energy Efficient

By Kara Masterson

Energy efficiency is the latest residential trend sweeping neighborhoods across America, but this is more than just a passing fad. Energy efficient homes are not only eco-friendly but also economically since they allow property owners to realize savings on their monthly utility bills. If you would like to reduce the carbon footprint of your home while at the same time lowering your monthly expenses, here are four interesting ways to foster energy efficiency:

Cooking With The Sun

More than three million people in developing countries enjoy meals that are prepared with the power of sunshine. Similar to the way you make sun-brewed tea, solar cooking devices work on the principles of reflection, refraction and heat transfer. These devices need to be placed outside as if they were charcoal grills, and their various mechanisms include: heat boxes, panels, and parabolic solar heaters.

Exercise Bikes That Recharge Your Smartphones

Imagine being able to charge up your iPhone as you burn off calories at home. The energy you create while you exercise on a stationary bike can be transformed into 50 watts or more of electricity, enough to charge up your smartphone or tablet. A company in Oregon makes bicycle dynamos with USB connectors that can be used as electric chargers for mobile devices. Pedal power is not a new concept; it has been used for years at small indigenous villages in Central America that are not connected to the power grid.

Remodeling With Skylights

A reasonable investment in skylights can substantially reduce your cooling, heating and electricity costs by improving ventilation, illumination and indoor climate control in the daytime. Modern skylight kits make installation easier and are rated with Energy Star labels vetted by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Residential Solar Panel Kits

Widespread use of solar panels for residential properties is not yet a reality for a number of reasons. First of all, utility companies operate at certain financial margins tied to jurisdictional governments by means of taxes, fees and repayment of subsidies; what this means for homeowners is that they cannot fully disconnect from the grid and switch to solar just yet. What they can do at this time is to make a small investment on a residential solar panel kit, such as those at Renogy, that connects to the power grid. These kits start with electricity generation capacities of one kilowatt; they are compliant with utility regulations and can provide significant monthly savings to homeowners.

In the end, going green will not only make you feel better about nature conservation but also help you keep more cash in your wallet. It is definitely well worth the time and energy to help bring about a better environment.

It’s a critical time for the arts and healthcare across the USA. In solidarity with Americans for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and dozens of arts organizations, the AATA was a proud National Partner for the 30th annual Arts Advocacy Day, March 20 and 21, 2017, in Washington, DC. Executive Director Cynthia Woodruff and I represented the AATA at the event’s National Arts Action Summit. Hosted by Americans for the Arts (AftA) in partnership with over 85 arts-related cultural and civic groups, we joined together with a record 700 enthusiastic participants – and we were noticed! The New York Times and the Washington Post reported on this most well-attended Arts Advocacy Day to date.

AATA has been represented at previous Arts Advocacy Days, and our support of this year’s event was all the more significant given the planned budget cuts impacting the National Endowments for the Arts (NEA) and the Humanities (NEH). — TheShadeRoom (@TheShadeRoom) April 2, 2017

According to TMZ, the kangaroo is part of a traveling exotic zoo and its handler Javon Stacks ― who went viral last week after he was recorded walking the kangaroo around Detroit streets ― claimed to have proper licensing.

PETA was disappointed, as well.

“Traumatic situations can be fatal to kangaroos — who are not hardy animals — and this individual was subjected to a great deal of stress by being dragged in front of a boisterous crowd and forced to ‘dance,’” PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said in a statement to the media. “PETA hopes the U.S. Department of Agriculture will conduct an immediate investigation and that the backlash over this stunt will remind all comedians that there’s nothing funny about cruelty to animals.”

Epps apologized in an Instagram post, claiming he would donate to Save the Kangaroos in light of the backlash.

The Huffington Post reached out to a rep for Epps but did not hear back as of press time.

Climate Change Could Have A Serious Impact On Mental Health: Report

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Climate change threatens our cities, our crops, our health and our safety. What many people don’t know is that it also threatens our minds.

On Wednesday, just a day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order undoing the Obama administration’s climate change efforts, the American Psychological Association and the environmental group ecoAmerica published a report describing how climate change is poised to take a grievous toll on our mental health. The report, “Mental Health and our Changing Climate: Impacts, Implications and Guidance,” concludes that people living in a number of regions could become more susceptible to post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, suicide and other mental health issues as a result of climate change.

“It all sounds quite drastic, but it’s not inevitable,” Susan Clayton, one of the authors of the report, said Wednesday during a webinar on the topic.

In addition to outlining the connection between climate change and mental health, the report also offers guidance on how to help people who are most vulnerable. That includes expanding infrastructure for mental health programs in susceptible communities and better preparing first responders to address mental health issues in the wake of a disaster.

Here are some of the connections between changing weather patterns and mental health:

Disasters are linked to short- and long-term mental health issues

In 2014, human-induced climate change played a role in at least 14 extreme weather events, National Geographic reports. These included Hawaii’s active hurricane season, droughts in East Africa, and record rains in New Zealand and France. People who endure such events may subsequently experience immediate or long-term psychological trauma due to personal injury, death of a loved one, or loss of personal property or livelihood, among other issues.

Acute traumatic stress is the most common mental health problem that survivors of natural disasters experience, according to the report. But it’s far from the only one.

Of a sample of people affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, for example, 1 in 6 had post-traumatic stress disorder. Suicide and suicidal ideation ― also known as suicidal thoughts ― more than doubled among this group in the aftermath of the storm. And nearly half the people developed an anxiety or mood disorder such as depression.

Hot weather is associated with increased aggression, suicide

In the U.S. alone, the number of heat waves tripled between 2011 and 2012. Studies have found that hot temperatures are associated with increased aggression ― which can lead people to hurt themselves and others.

Homicide rates rise when temperatures go up, a number of studies have concluded. Higher temperatures have also been linked to increased instances of suicide, because the “distress” of feeling hot can sometimes overwhelm people with pre-existing mental health conditions.

Displacement can lead to feelings of severe loss

By 2050, about 200 million people will be displaced due to climate change. This is expected to occur because of a number of factors, including rising sea levels and certain areas becoming unable to support crops. Losing one’s home can lead to a condition called solastalgia, characterized by intense feelings of desolation and loss.

Loss of place is not a trivial experience.
"Mental Health and Our Changing Climate" report, 2017

“Loss of place is not a trivial experience,” the authors of the report note. “Many people form a strong attachment to the place where they live, finding it to provide a sense of stability, security, and personal identity.” People who maintain an attachment to their local community also report experiencing greater happiness, life satisfaction and optimism.

Compounding the problem is the fact that people who are forced to move will also lose social connections, meaning their crucial support systems are likely to erode. The loss of these networks would put people’s sense of continuity and belonging at risk.

Loss of land and occupation leads to loss of identity

People with location-based occupations, like farmers and fishermen, will have to abandon their work if the natural world changes too much. This is happening in communities worldwide, but the circumpolar north is especially vulnerable. It’s warming at more than twice the global average rate, putting local indigenous people at what the report calls “the frontlines in experiencing climate change effects.”

In Canada, for example, Inuit people hunt, fish, forage and harvest regularly. Mental health professionals have a number of concerns about this specific community, whose well-being could be compromised with even a subtle change to their environment. Inuit people say they’re turning to drugs and alcohol to help fill “the newly ‘empty’ time” they once used for land-based activities, the report notes. Professionals are also concerned that members of this community could lose a sense of their cultural identity and a feeling of balance and good health that they derive from the natural world.

“I think for the Inuit, going out on the land is just as much a part of our life as breathing,” a local leader said, according to the report. “So if we don’t get out, then, for our mental well-being, it’s like you are not fulfilled.”

17-Year-Old Fights Off Shark To Escape Florida Panhandle Attack

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

A teenage girl fought off a 5-foot shark with a punch in the face after it grabbed her by the leg off the Florida panhandle on Sunday, authorities said.

Caitlyn Taylor, 17, needed 80 stitches for six puncture wounds to her right leg she sustained while swimming at a Destin, Florida, beach, according to her mom. She also had scrapes on her left leg.

Taylor, visiting from Lexington, Kentucky, was swimming in the waist-deep water around 3:30 p.m. when she saw what she initially thought was a dolphin headed toward her, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

“She turned around and the head of it was coming towards her with a wave and she said she turned to swim back to shore,” her mother, Tracey Taylor, told WHAS-11 News.

That’s when the teen felt the shark “just grab her and lift her off of the bottom,” her mom said.

Caitlyn Taylor turned and punched the shark in the face, her mother said, and it released her.

Taylor, who was visiting the popular spring break location with her mother for a softball tournament, had “fairly minor” injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. A witness said it appeared the shark took a good bite out of her.

“She was bleeding pretty good. She was lucky it didn’t get her femoral artery because that could have been really serious,” Francis Thelen, a tourist visiting from Michigan, told the Northwest Florida Daily News.

It wasn’t clear what type of shark was involved in the attack. Witnesses said it was about 5 feet long.

Locals described the location of the attack, at the second offshore sandbar, as a popular feeding hole for sharks. Multiple Facebook users said sharks, including bull sharks — known as one of the most aggressive sharks — are frequently spotted in the area.

Shark bites are uncommon in the area. According to the International Shark Attack File, there have only been three other reported shark attacks in Okaloosa County, which includes Destin, since 1882.

In comparison, Volusia County, home to Daytona Beach on Florida’s southeastern coast, has had 290 attacks, giving it the title of shark-bite capital of the world.

Green Mountain Energy Sun Club Partners with Evelyn’s Park to Establish Community Space as Sustainable Leader

http://ift.tt/2nUbokg

Evelyn’s Park, a new five-acre community green space in Bellaire, Texas, is set to become one of the most sustainable parks in the nation with a $313,500 grant from the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club. With solar power, a rainwater capture system and on-site composting capabilities, the donation will help Evelyn’s Park achieve net zero energy status for the park’s day-to-day operations by late 2018, leading the way for parks across the country. Evelyn’s Park will open to the public on Saturday, April 22, 2017, to coincide with global Earth Day.

Once all systems come online in late 2018, Evelyn’s Park’s sustainable features will include:

  • 73 kilowatts of solar power across nearly 5,000 square feet of space to achieve net zero energy status for the park’s day-to-day electricity costs and operations
    • 21 kilowatts of solar power have been installed to-date at the park
  • 20,000-gallon cistern to provide significant rainwater capture to mitigate 40 percent of the park’s overall water consumption
  • Several on-site tumbler composters for use in the park’s organic gardens that will recycle fruit and carbohydrate based food waste, coffee grounds and some compostable packaging from The Ivy and James cafĂ©, set to open in early 2017

“Evelyn’s Park is focused on enriching our local community by connecting people to their city, their surroundings and to each other,” said Mark Parsons, president of Green Mountain Energy Sun Club. “Supporting organizations like Evelyn’s Park is why the Sun Club was founded, and we’re proud to help them soon achieve net zero energy status for the park’s day-to-day operations.”

Evelyn’s Park, located at 4400 Bellaire Boulevard, will debut with a grand opening “Picnic in the Park” event on Earth Day – April 22 – from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., designed to bring the community together for an afternoon of family, food and fun.

“We are very excited to partner with the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club to make Evelyn’s Park a leader in sustainability and a resource for sustainability education for the local community,” said Patricia King-Ritter, board president of Evelyn’s Park Conservancy. “It is a priority for us to teach the importance of conservation as we aim toward our goal of becoming a net zero park, and the sustainability grant is helping us reach that goal.”

The April 22 event will showcase the park’s amenities and future programming to be offered on a year-round basis. The Sustainability Zone powered by the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club will promote on-site water bottle recycling and sustainable education activities, and feature fun Earth Day-themed photo opportunities and a community art piece involving solar panels.

To date, the Sun Club, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has donated more than $4 million to support over 90 nonprofits across the country through solar and sustainability project donations.
