Platform, Schmatform

Them: “We’d really love to show you our platform. It’s an artificial intelligence, big data, machine learning chatbot with robust apis. It is a system of engagement designed to deliver both candidate and employee experience.”

Me: “Why do you call it a platform?”

Them: “There are five different modules that work together.”

Me: “That’s not a platform.”

Them: “Yes it is.”

Me: “What do you mean by ‘experience’?”

Them: “Everyone who uses it has an experience. It’s intuitive and easy to use.”

Me: “Doesn’t dumbing down the interface make it a lot harder for power users to get their work done?”

Them: “But, it’s a consumer grade experience.”

Me: “So what do you do to make the candidate’s experience better?”

Them: “We tell them that we’ve received their resume. Then, if our customer wants to, we can tell them the status of their application.”

Me: “Do your customers use that feature? Who answers the candidate’s questions when they have a question? Doesn’t that increase the time and expense of recruiting?”

Them: “That’s really up to our customers.”

Me: “Can you give me an example of a customer who is doing this?”

Them: “Not really.”

Me: “So tell me about the platform thing again.”

Them: “We have five modules and they all work together.”

Me: “That used to be called a product.”
