Is A.I. not simply a computer program with the sole purpose of improving itself, which would eventually lead to consciousness

yeah?.. Since life is basically a single celled organism, put through certain systems and parameters in order to improve itself which eventually lead to us a few billion years later. Surely A.I. should at least be on the same terms and parallels with biological life?
