If buying shares in airlines are generally a bad investment, why do some people do it?

I always hear people say that buying stock in airlines are a bad investment, but obviously there are people out there who do buy airline stock since airlines are mostly publicly traded companies.

So is there some sort of rule of thumb when it comes to buying Arline stock??
