Whether we use them in our working environment or in a DIY situation, power and hand tools need to be handled with care.
Using hand tools as safely as possible is mostly a matter of common sense. For instance, don’t use tools with handles that have been taped up or are loose, splintered or cracked.
Before using chisels or hand-saws make sure they are properly sharpened.
Always use the proper tool for the job. A hammer and screwdriver never go together. Neither can one be used to do the job of the other, ie never attempt to hammer in a screw or use a screwdriver to knock in a nail.

A few sensible rules should also always be observed when using power tools.
Never carry electric tools by the power cord. I know this sounds obvious but people still do it every day.
Disconnect drills, power saws, routers, sanders and other tools when not in use.
If tools are damaged, replace them or get them repaired. At the very least remove them from the workplace so they aren’t putting you or others in danger.

Avoid operating power tools in wet locations and use power cords with a three-pronged plug.
Make sure that cords are not a tripping hazard and keep floor surfaces free of debris.
If you are using brush cutters, chain saws or other liquid fuel tools, there are additional risks to be considered particularly when refueling.
Avoid fire hazard by turning off the engine and letting it cool down before refueling. Also, ensure there are no open flames or electrical sparks near vapors.
Care should be taken to avoid breathing fuel vapors and only approved containers should be used for liquid fuel.
Before using any tool make sure that you or any other operator has, at the very least, read the manufacturer’s instructions on its safe use.
As you are likely to be exposed to flying debris or particles, as well as dust, fumes, and vapors ensure that you always wear appropriate protective equipment when using any tool.
Finally, here’s a useful checklist that will help ensure your safety every time you get on the tools:
• Choose and use the right tool for the job
• Operate tools in accordance with manufacturer’s directions
• Wear correct protective gear
• Inspect tools for defects before use
• Ensure tools get regular maintenance
