I graduated about 3 years ago and was hired right out of school for full-time javascript engineering.
The job has been fun, and some of my coworkers have been great, but I’m gradually growing more and more weary of the “corporate” culture. The misappropriation of resources, the inability to adequately manage a technical product, the lack of greater vision/scope, etc. etc.. Maybe things are different if you’re at a “tech” company, but working a tech job in a non-tech-focused sector has proven overall quite draining.
I’ve always liked the idea of a startup — no delusions of grandeur or hopes of becoming the next Bill Gates here.. I’d be perfectly happy doing something I enjoy and making an adequate living doing so. Something about the idea of forging my own path, making my own product and getting up every morning to make it better is really appealing to me. I like the idea of furthering my own dream(s) instead of just furthering someone else’s.
The problem is… I don’t really know where to start. I don’t have some masterful idea cooked up already, or really any particular direction. I have web programming skills ( professionally I am a JS engineer ), but I’m just not sure where/how to start down this path.
I know I could just google this but I’m curious to hear advice from anyone else who has found themselves in a similar position. How did you get started?
