If you’re working on a side project in the hopes of it becoming bigger (read: profitable) while holding onto a day job, how can you protect yourself in terms of IP and product ownership? For example, I’ve heard some companies can claim a product that you made on your own time is theirs so long as you are salaried (possibly even if the product is in a different field than the one you are employed in).
Is there a ‘standard’ form or procedure you can use when starting a new job in order to protect yourself from any possible disagreements over ownership? Is this as uncommon as it seems to me?
I’m based in the US but for those who are not, comments pertaining to any area would be helpful.
