How do you do research or find information about a particular market?

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

I’m working on an idea right now that I believe has some potential in a relatively niche market. That said, I want to make sure I do my due diligence and understand the overall market a little more clearly.

The problem is, the market has traditionally been fairly localized and has traditionally relied on human interaction and dealing with cash. In this situation, how do I find reliable information about the market itself?

Without getting into the specifics (don’t want to violate any subreddit rules), assume there’s a fairly well established market for widgets, but I want to find the overall market size and characteristics of the sub-market of individuals dealing in accessories, components, and add-ons to the widget.

I’ve done a bit of research already but haven’t had much success finding concrete, reliable numbers. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
