In 1975, Sri Lanka had thoughts of pushing for UN involvement In Antarctica. In multiple cables, the US pushes behind the scene to keep the UN out of Antartcica.
In this cable, Her Majesty’s Government (HMG) feels that being direct, “would only confirm Sri Lanka view that treaty parties are trying to keep all the goodies for themselves.”
I wonder what the “goodies” are?
Why the overwhelming push to keep the UN and new signatories out of Antarctica? There are multiple cables like this one from Kissinger:
In this cable, a Canadian science official would like to travel to Antarctica. The request states in part, “On the whole these reports have been constructive and even in some sensitive areas, e.g., reports on high technology and energy subjects…”
This reference intrigues me. Why the reference to high technology and energy? It seems like the requestor was alluding to something.
