When I heard Donald Trump say those fateful words, “such a nasty woman” in the final moments of the final presidential debate of 2016, the first person I thought of was my mother. Not because she’s “nasty” ― my mom doesn’t even drink or swear ― but because she’s strong as hell, outspoken, successful at work and has been our family’s breadwinner since the 80s. The latter are just the kind of qualities that get a woman called “nasty.”
And she made me a “nasty woman,” too, for which I owe her an enormous debt.
Below are a round-up of Mother’s Day cards that celebrate the strong, feminist moms who made us the women we are.
